FAQ

In this section we try and answer some of the questions we most frequently come across.

If you have a question that is not answered in this section please contact us directly and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

I live in a block of flats and want to get Sky. What do I do?

Many people living in apartment blocks will have access to a communal system which should provide access to TV and satellite signals.

Many systems, however, have not been upgraded for digital Freeview or for Sky+, although you can usually still get analogue TV and normal Sky.

If you cannot get digital Freeview or Sky+ then you should contact your letting agent or estate management company about rectifying this.

Cable Guys will do a free survey of your property to assess what is required to upgrade your system.

I want to get rid of my Sky subscription. How do I get TV channels for free?

As long as you have had your Sky subscription for more than 12 months when you cancel your Sky subscription you get to keep your digibox.

When your subscription expires you will lose your packaged channels but will still retain access to over 240 free TV channels, known as FreeSat from Sky.

Can I get access to channels broadcast in other countries?

It is possible to get access to channels broadcast in many other countries through a satellite dish.

The further away the country is from the UK the larger you dish has to be. There is a limit to the size of dish and also the countries from which you can receive satellite signals from.

It is also possible to receive signals from several different satellites through a single dish if the channels you require are not all broadcast from the same satellite.

Do I have to get a Sky engineer to install Sky?

No, there is no reason why you have to get a Sky engineer to install Sky. Cable Guys work in conjunction with an Authorised Sky Agent (ASA) so that we can provide the whole Sky service - from ordering your package to installing your dish and setting-up your digibox.

We pride ourselves on our customer service and providing the right service at the right price.  If you want a more personal service, done how you want, when you want, then Cable Guys are the company for you.

How can I get free HD channels?

There is currently only one way to get free HD channels - with a satellite dish and a freesat HD set-top decoder box connected to a HDCP TV.

Freesat HD decodes the satellite signal and provides a HDMI output for your TV to view the HD channels. You can also use a free-to-air HD receiver which can access more channels and satellites than a freesat receiver (this requires extra equipment) but is harder to use and configure.

Watching video over the internet is becoming more popular with offerings such as BT Vision allowing subscribers access to video content over an ADSL broadband connection. However free HD content is not that readily available and requires special equipment (such as Media Centre PC with HD output) to enable the content to be viewed on a HD TV.

There are three ways to get free HD channels - either through freesat, free-to-air or through Freesat from Sky.Freesat is the result of a collaboration between the BBC and ITV to provide subscription-free channels through a satellite dish and it provides over 110 TV channels and over 35 radio stations.  It uses a standard "mini-dish" and cabling the same as a Sky system and your only costs are installation and the set-top box.

Free-to-air uses a satellite receiver (made by companies such as Technomate and Manhattan) to receive un-encrypted channels. By using a larger dish this sysem can be lined up to other satellites, such as NileSat, allowing you to view channels from other countries. To view any free HD channels in HD you will need to use an HD receiver.

Freesat from Sky uses a Sky digibox and minidish to receive over 240 TV channels and over 85 radio stations. If you cancel your Sky subscription then you will have Freesat from Sky once your subscription lapses.

Otherwise Cable Guys can install a Freesat from Sky system, including digibox and dish, for you.

What is freesat?

Freesat is a collaboration between the BBC and ITV to provide subscription-free TV channels through a satellite dish.

Using the same mini-dish as Sky, freesat currently provides over 110 TV channels and over 35 radio stations including two HD channels - BBC-HD and ITV-HD (information correct as of June 2009).

If you have had Sky in your property before, live in a property with a Sky mini-dish on it or live in a property with a communal TV system then getting freesat is cheap and easy.

If you don't have access to an existing satellite signal then you will need to have a mini-dish fitted to your property and either one or two cables installed, depending on whether you want freesatSD, freesatHD or freesat+.

For more information visit www.freesat.co.uk, the official website for freesat.

How long should I expect an aerial installation to last?

The lifespan of an aerial installation is in direct proportion to the quality of the components used and time taken in the installation.

If you pay less than £100 for an aerial installation it is unlikely that it will last for a significant length of time.

At Cable Guys we are so confident of the quality of our aerial installations that we offer a 5 year warranty as standard and we thoroughly expect the installation to last for over 15 years.

If you break down the cost of our aerial installation over the lifetime of the installation it can cost less than £10 a year for reliable, hassle-free television enjoyment.

What's going to happen after the "digital switchover"?

After the "digital switchover" the only way to watch television through an aerial will be with an Integrated Digital Switchover (iDTV, basically a TV with a built-in digital Freeview tuner) or Freeview set-top box.

When the analogue channels are switched off more digital channels will be introduced. It is widely anticipated that High Definition (HD) channels will also be broadcast and trials of Freeview HD are expected in Manchester, Liverpool (Winter Hill transmitter) and London (Crystal Palace transmitter) in December 2010.

I live in a block of flats but don't have access to digital TV. What can I do about it?

Many communal dwellings (such as blocks of flats, apartment blocks etc) will have an Integrated Reception System (IRS) installed so that all dwellings have access to both TV and satellite signals from a single aerial and satellite dish.

Unfortunately many of these systems were installed before the advent of digital Freeview and Sky+ and may require upgrading before residents can watch digital Freeview or Sky+.

Cable Guys have a great amount of experience with communal systems and have been contracted by many companies for the maintenance and upgrading of these systems throughout the Midlands.

If you have had problems with Freeview or Sky+ then get in contact with us and we will liaise with your estate management company to discuss how these issues can be resolved.
